J.J. Zhang, a chemical engineer from Mason, Ohio, has won MarketWatch’s
second annual World’s Next Great Investing Columnist contest, with our
editor judges choosing his work over five other finalists.
Zhang, who holds Bachelor of Science degrees from Clarkson University in
both chemical engineering and biomolecular sciences, writes the
investing blog MarketTech Reports and serves as an informal financial
manager for family and friends.
As the contest winner, Zhang will write a freelance column for
MarketWatch called Winner Take All. The column will run approximately
twice a week through the next six months.
You can read the first J.J. Zhang’s Winner Take All here.
The debut column for the contest winner comes after a lengthy delay from
the official close of contest voting Nov. 4, but deliberations over the
outcome were complicated by the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the
holidays and the usual red tape of freelance contract completion.
Hari Hara Mishra earns recognition as the Readers’ Choice, pulling in
the most Facebook “Like” votes, more than 2,200, in the final round and
about 4,000 throughout the contest.

More than 100 contestants entered Round 1 of the competition in
September. The field was narrowed to 26 who went through a second round
of voting and then the final six faced off. Entries were received from
more than a dozen countries around the world.
