BlackBerry 10 is Going to Have the Best Web Browser of Any Mobile Platform

One of the biggest drawbacks of current BlackBerry devices is their mediocre mobile web experience.
Many of small screens, low resolutions, and no touch functionality. That makes browsing via the mobile web a real pain.
Research In Motion never anticipated how big the mobile web would be, which is why it fell behind Google's Android and Apple's iPhone, who offer vastly superior browsing experiences: bigger screens, higher resolutions, and responsive multi-touch gestures. RIM still offers great email, but people want more—they want to be able to do virtually everything they can do on a full-size desktop.

Well, RIM finally got the message this year and as a result is placing huge emphasis on creating a killer mobile web browsing experience for BlackBerry 10. The company's forthcoming browser slaughters standard HTML5 tests, making the iPhone's Safari browser look like an antique. And now BB10's browser has cleared Ring 1 on the Ringmark test, becoming only the second mobile browser to ever achieve the ranking.
“The browser team here at RIM has been working closely with the HTML5 experts at Facebook, who developed the Ringmark HTML5 test suite, to ensure the BlackBerry 10 browser would meet the standard,” wrote Matthew Staikos this week on RIM's developer blog. “By meeting the Ringmark Ring 1 benchmark standard, developers can add a level of advanced functionality to their HTML5 apps and be confident that the BlackBerry 10 browser can execute the app without problem.”

BB10 scores a perfect 149/149 on Ring 1. The latest Safari for iPhone fails nine tests on iOS 6.0. And where the iPhone scores in the high 300s on HTML5test.com, BB10 scores in the high 400s—nearly a perfect score and even better than Google Chrome on desktop.

Analyst Says There's a 30% Chance RIM Shares Will Hit $43 Next Year

While the haunting words of James Faucette still linger in our minds—"BlackBerry 10 is likely to be dead on arrival"—an even more salient analyst has come forth to sing a different tune.
Jefferies & Co analyst Peter Misek helped Research In Motion shares crack double digits for the first time in five months after he upgraded the stock from "underperform" to "hold," suggesting there is an up to 30% chance that RIM will succeed.
In the case of such success, Peter sees shares skyrocketing up to $43 next year. That would be a growth rate of more than 300%, though shares would still be down significantly from the Canadian company's high of more than $140 in 2008.
Why does Peter think RIM can make a comeback now? Carriers' reception to BB10, mostly. The analyst argues that carriers do indeed want a third smartphone platform to succeed in the market, and that BB10 has a legitimate chance of being that platform.

“We have been surprised by the strongly positive initial feedback on BB10 from carriers,” Peter said. “We expected a more muted response, given BB10 is two years late and RIM’s market share has plunged from 20% to 5%."
"Our theory," he concluded, "is that carriers see BB10 as one of their last chances to avoid being locked into a long-term smartphone OS duopoly.”

RIM CEO: 'Carriers are Excited About BlackBerry 10'

More than 50 carriers worldwide are now testing the BlackBerry 10 platform, said Research In Motion today. BB10 is still on schedule for release in the first quarter of 2013, the Canadian company has once again affirmed.
"I have spent the last several weeks on the road visiting with carrier partners around the world to show them the BlackBerry 10 platform and to share with them our plans for launch," chief executive officer Thorsten Heins told Cnet in a statement.
"Their response has been tremendous," he added, "They are excited about the prospect of launching BlackBerry 10 in their markets. Our respective teams are now engaged on the technical and commercial preparation of the launch of BlackBerry 10 and the lab entry is an important milestone in that context."

The hard work will not stop here as we build towards launch. Our developer teams are continuing to generate momentum to bring a wealth of applications to BlackBerry 10, our enterprise teams have started to present BlackBerry 10 devices and services to our business customers, and our engineers are fully mobilized to ensure that BlackBerry 10 launches flawlessly in the first quarter of 2013.

Unfortunately, RIM will miss what is looking like the hugest holiday season for smartphones ever. Several flagship phones have been launched recently, including Apple's iPhone 5, Samsung's Galaxy Note II, and Nokia's Lumia 920.

More Canadians Plan to Buy BlackBerry 10 Devices Than Android

While Canada often struggles to avoid being shrouded by America's shadow, we are decidedly different in a few ways. One of those ways is our persistent faith in Research In Motion, the Waterloo-based BlackBerry maker that has been innovating technology since 1984.
While the US has found it very easy to abandon RIM, we Canadians have been uncharaceristically patriotic about defending our homegrown brand. Sure, an array of customers and even Canadian media have thrown RIM around like a ragdoll during the past two years, but the proof is in the pudding: Canadians are not yet giving up on BlackBerry.
This may be difficult for some to believe, but it's reinforced by a recent Forum Research poll performed on behalf of Canadian Business magazine in September. According to the research, 23% of smartphone owners currently use a BlackBerry, just behind Google's Android at 27%. That's much different than the US, where Android cracks 40% and BlackBerry hovers near single digits (it varies slightly by source of data, of course).
Apple still reigns king—35% of Canadian smartphone owners have an iPhone. So no, BlackBerry isn't number one, or even number two in its own country right now. But what's really interesting to note is what type of device people plan to buy next.
According to the data, 18% of mobile users in Canada plan to make their next smartphone a BlackBerry—let's assume BB10, because it's out relatively soon and no one is buying a non-upgradeable Bold 9900 this late in the game. Now, 18% isn't a huge number; indeed, it's lower than the current ownership of 23%. So how is this good news?
Well, only 17% of users plan to buy an Android. Yes, the operating system that's taking over the US is actually poised to lose ground in Canada. Apple's iPhone? Well, it's captured the interest of more than half of Canada's mobile users, so it's not even a remotely close race. But still: RIM clearly has a shot at being number two, at least in Canada.
And let's not forget that Canada is likely the only country in the world where the PlayBook has second-best tablet marketshare at 19%.

We're not surprised. While we don't have many good things to say about BlackBerry OS 7 and the current offering of devices, we're pretty stoked for BB10. Early demonstrations point to an all-new mobile platform that is sleek, efficient, and—this is the key for RIM—innovative.
If RIM can lure enough developers—or successfully port Android apps—the company will be back in the game with an extremely competitive OS that rivals the best of iOS, Android, and Windows.
Whether anyone will care, however, is another question entirely.
